Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is a third-person adventure in which players can control six distinctive characters, each in a different part of the world. You will navigate from one area to another solving environmental puzzles and completing the story objectives. In many cases, you must fight enemies with your sword or dagger. You may also solve some puzzles by throwing objects at them or by using your dagger as a grappling hook. The Prince will gradually develop ninja abilities to make him more agile and combat capable. These abilities include wall running and climbing, pushing blocks over, ledge grabbing and swinging on poles, jumping across gaps and attacking while hanging off ledges and other objects. The Prince will travel through a wide range of environments including forests, beaches, plains, underwater caverns and winter wastelands. In this Prince of Persia, the Prince's ability to manipulate time is introduced in a unique way that impacts gameplay. In addition to allowing the player to rewind time in certain instances to try out different strategies or simply undo a fatal mistake, the Prince can also slow down time during combat. This is most prominently used in boss fights with the Dahaka, who draws strength from time itself and cannot be defeated unless you wield a Sandglass item. The Dahaka is a powerful beast with incredible speed which has been chasing after the Prince for his entire life. He is constructed of gold and will be vulnerable to attacks made with the time slowing skill. The game takes place in two time periods. The first is in mythical Persia ruled by the Ayatollah, or Shah, who wields absolute power over his people. The second involves the modern-day world, where the Shah's son has inherited his title. However, after witnessing an injustice committed by his father's ministers, he decides to overthrow them by any means necessary. The game was developed primarily for Microsoft Windows using Epic Games' Unreal Engine 2 technology and proprietary middleware developed by Gameloft called JXA (a portmanteau of "Gameloft" and "XNA"). A version for PlayStation Portable was released, developed by Widescreen Games using the same engine. Versions for Nintendo DS and Game Boy Advance were also planned, but were cancelled before any development took place. On September 27, 2009, Gameloft announced that they had acquired the rights to the "Prince of Persia" franchise from Ubisoft, allowing them to continue developing games in the series; according to Gameloft, "Ubisoft will continue to publish all upcoming Prince of Persia projects (PC and consoles) while Gameloft will be handling all handheld versions. This partnership will help bring to life Gameloft's long-standing vision of delivering rich and innovative games to all platforms while maintaining the authenticity and integrity of the franchise ". The game was met with mixed reception upon release. "PCMag" gave it a positive review, saying that the adventure gameplay is fun, but that the graphics are underwhelming. IGN also gave it a 7 out of 10, praising its atmosphere and cohesiveness with previous games in the series but criticizing the combat system for being too simple. GameSpot gave it an identical score, criticizing its harsh difficulty level but praising its intense atmosphere. The PSP version received "generally unfavorable reviews", according to video game review aggregator Metacritic. cfa1e77820
